Sometimes procrastination can be a good thing. I'd been eyeing a Milky Way Mold for a while now, but with shipping costs to Canada being what they are, I've been putting off buying it.

The other day, hubby needed gas for the car, and the border lineups weren't bad, so we decided to head across the border. Well going across to Bellingham naturally means a stop into Otion. This is what I picked up this time. I had to refrain from buying everything in the store. The dragon mold is what I wanted to order, so I was thrilled to see Otion now carries it.

Of course I had to try out the mold right away. I ended up playing with colour combinations trying to figure out what works and so these aren't full sized because it was all about the colours. I chose the gold colour because it's Chinese and we're known for our gold obsession. ;). I used sunshine yellow from Soapylove's jewel kit and added gold mica.

This next one obviously didn't turn out right, I ran out of soap and had to make some more quickly before it set. Yes I was being lazy, but it was also an experiment to see if would result in a graduated look.

Red and gold are traditional Chinese colours, so this was the result.
Version 1

Version 2

But I liked the black so much, I made this.

So honestly, which one do you like, if any? Oh, and they're scented creamsicle and kumquat.

I also decided to do a variation of the beach soap I did last time. (Thanks for the inspiration Cee.) This time I remembered the glitter.

p.s. If you ever go to Bellingham, I'd highly recommend stopping for a bite (and a beer) at The Copper Hog. I know there are lots of great places to eat in Bellingham, but I just can't stop going here. If you have any suggestions of other fantastic eateries in Bellingham, let me know!

  1. I am so jealous that you got to go to Otion! I'm hoping to get there this summer, my list is a mile long already! I love all of your soaps...my favorite dragon is the first one, the yellow on black really pops and I love the glitter in the black! I LOVE your beach soap too, it's so upbeat and happy...makes me smile, everything about it is perfect =)

    1. I would've taken you with me Cee, but it was a last minute decision. ;) If you can't make it there often, then you might as well go in with a big list, or just buy one of everything so you don't even need a list.

Thanks, I agree with you the gold does stand out best against the black background. And I'm glad you like the beach soap, like I said, your beach baby soap inspired me.

  2. How cool that you got to go to Otion! I'd love to visit there someday, but it's a long way to Washington for me. All of your dragon soaps are so pretty, it's hard to choose just one! I think my favorite is the black dragon against the red. And the beach soap is so cute!

    1. You'd love it there Jenny, it really is a soaper's candy store. It'd be a great stop if you were to trek out to the west coast for a visit, and the west coast is well worth visiting.

Thank you, I love the dragons themselves, I think they're so cool looking and different. The beach soap was fun to create, I think it'll have to be part of my regular repetoire.

  3. Dragons are really cool, I like that you made soap with one. I really like the first, the third and the fifth dragon. Your color combo for the beach soap is perfect. Love those colors together. I really want to visit Otion. My daughter is trying to convince me to fly this August out to Vancouver. Apparently there is a Supernatural (ever see that show?) convention. If we can get a direct flight, I might go. How far are you from DT Vancouver?

    1. I agree Michelle, dragons are totally cool and in a heavily Asian populated city like Vancouver, I'm hoping that I can find a market for them. I think I need to make the colours a little more concentrated to make them stand out. The beach soap was a throw together of some stuff I had laying around. I guess I shouldn't say it like that, should I? LOL!

You could totally spend all day at Otion even though the store isn't that huge. I've never seen the show, is it good? We live about 40 mins drive from DT Vancouver, but if you stay closer to the airport rather than actually downtown, I could meet you there. There's a casino/hotel right on the skytrain line which takes you straight to the airport or right into downtown.

    2. Supernatural is a fun show, if you like those types of shows (ghosts, fantasy, etc...). Even if you hate the shows the guys are good looking. LOL! I think It is filmed in Vancouver which is why they have the convention. We'll either get there this summer or next for sure. Maya is a HUGE fan.

It would be fun to get together if we get out there :)

    3. I need a proper 2nd tv where I can watch shows without the hubby making disparaging remarks cause I do like shows like that. So that's what you watch it for, the cute guys? ;) If it's filmed in Vancouver, I should at least take a look to see if I can recognize landmarks.

We definitely have to get together if you come out this way and we can paint the town silly.

    1. I know how you feel Maja, we have spring for 3 months and summer for 2 weeks. ;) I should probably put in a disclaimer that you have to bring your own bucket and shovel. :)

I really like the detail of the dragon mold too. The black and gold are a nice contrast, aren't they?

    1. I guess the gold dragon really stands out in stark contrast to the black background, doesn't it? I'm going to have to work on the yellow and red if I want to attract an asian audience. Maybe I'll try those colour blocks I bought.

We don't have Rennassiance Fairs here, which is a pity. The beach one was fun to make, now if I could only use it to make summer show up.
