I don't usually do Valentine's, but when I do...

Wait, I never do Valentine's Day. I am so non-romantic, it sometimes seems like the husband I have role reversals: he used to pick out rom coms thinking it's something I'd like and I go for action or mystery movies. I'm currently reading Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn and taking notes on the how to. Just kidding. ;)

However, being Valentine's (or having it close to since this post will be after Valentine's is over) I decided to make heart soaps. I was actually going for a heart within a heart (kinda like when they show the Grinch's heart growing by 3 times) but it didn't work out. The clear soap turned cloudy as it cooled, perhaps I heated it too much or had some white mixed in unbeknownst to me (I was using some old soaps that I chopped up).

The sparkles still show through though.

But it's not until you turn the soaps upside down that you can see the embeds.

The soaps are scented with creamsicle which to me is a very Valentine-y scent. :)

What did you do for Valentine's Day? Did you go all out romantic or do you think it's a marketing ploy?

  1. Cute! I love hearts. Re: V-day.. marketing ploy. They play on a man's guilt. LOL!

    1. Hearts are nice and sentimental. ;) Does your hubby do anything for you for Valentine's Day Michelle?

    2. No. We don't celebrate. I'd hurt him if he bought me something for Valentines. lol!

    3. LOL Michelle! What if he bought you something and it just coincidentally was on February 14? ;)

  2. Cute heart embeds soaps. How did you make the smaller embed heart, or was it an eraser or something?

Valentine is just another day for me to ponder why some people stay married to sucky partners while others divorce their not-nearly-as-horrible spouses. Then I get all depressed all over again.

    1. The smaller hearts were made with the little heart mold.

I dont' think you should get stuck on wondering why people stay with their spouses, you don't have to live their lives so you don't have to worry about whether they're doing the right thing or not.

In my case, we found out R is bipolar, which while it doesn't excuse his behaviour, does explain why he acted the way he did sometimes. We're still trying to figure out what are the best drugs to help him combat this mental illness. At least the drugs he's currently on is helping him be a less angry person and I want to see what he becomes once he gets on the right combination of meds.

  3. Everyone likes hearts, no matter which day it is! I see another heart inside the red, it's so cute to have them in and in.....you could have continued placing them into each other, like Russian babushka dolls, lol
Hey, I read that book last summer, it's exciting and weird, agree?

    2. You're a true romantic Maja, that's why you like hearts every day. You're right, I had embedded a smaller heart into each of the two big hearts. I love the idea of having the hearts like nesting dolls, what a great idea!

Yes, it was very exciting and well written although I'm not sure what to make of the end, what did you think.

Roxana, if you like stories with twists and turns, you'll like Gone Girl.

    3. Oh you finished it! I'm not telling anything Roxana must not have a hint, before she starts reading. :-)

    4. Yes I did finish the book. I think I recall you said the ending wasn't quite what you were expecting? I know, we'll keep Roxana in the dark and have her find out all about it herself. ;)

  4. Even though you say you are not romantic, I think there is a subconscious romantic side to you, as evidenced by the cute and sparkly soap hearts you made. :-) I am always at work on Valentine's day and I enjoy seeing couples and groups celebrate. My husband and 2 friends were at home waiting for me. We had scallops and pizza (I know, very odd combination). I brought home desserts: cappuccino creme brûlée and butter rum cake. Nothing romantic but it was a nice evening. :-)

    1. I've got you fooled then Silvia. :D I enjoyed playing with the heart holds and trying to make it into something a little different.

Guess your workplace must be crazy busy for Valentine's. I think your dinner sounds fabulous, love scallops and pizza is good for any occasion. And your desserts sound super yummy. I think a nice evening trumps romance any day. But see, that's my so non-romantic side coming out. ;)

  5. You made me laugh, Monica! Today I was asked by an old colleague what did I get for Valentines, and I lied saying that I got chocolate and flowers :).. (don't ask me why)...and he told me' wait and see what you get after 24 years of marriage'. I don't like Valentine, i find it too commercial, but we have another day called Dragobete on 24th of February which is our Romanian Valentine and that day we always do...ok, not with chocolate( they are not so healthy!) but with flowers for sure.
Back to your soap: Valentine or not, I adore hearts and the ones you made are too cute.

    1. You're so sweet Nat! I love that you told your old colleague that you got all the typical Valentine's gifts, well in your head you did right? ;) Did you tell him that after 24 years is when the gifts really need to start flowing, so his partner still feels loved? ;)

Is there a history behind Dragobete? I thin that's nice that you don't just follow what everyone in North America is doing. Do you get big bunches of flowers on Dragobete? I'd like a bouquet of chocolates because they can be good for you in moderation. Or better yet, a bunch of your homemade Snickers bars, now that would be yummy!

Thanks for the compliment about the hearts, I'm getting to like the fact that you can't really see the embeds so it's almost like a hidden surprise in there.

  6. I love your heart-in-a-heart soap, so cute Monica! We didn't do anything special as a couple on Valentine's Day, but we did go out for a nice breakfast the next day. We did get the kids some chocolates for Valentines though :)

    1. Thanks Cee! I'm beginning to think I have an embedding habit. ;) That's so sweet of you guys to get chocolates for the kids. I used to love holidays like Valentine's and Hallowe'ens for the day after when you could pick up sweets for half price. ;)

  7. Cute heart soaps, Monica! We're usually pretty low-key about Valentine's Day. Hubby usually brings me some roses and chocolate, and I'll get him some nice bourbon and cook us something special for dinner or something like that. If we do go out for dinner, we don't normally go on Valentine's Day. Too crazy and expensive at the restaurants. This year, we were traveling on V-Day and we hung out at a cool little pub in Austin, TX.

    1. Thanks Jenny! Your husband's such a romantic! I'd be totally for the gifts you give him, that is awesome!

Yeah I think many restaurants are probably crowded and therefore can't give you their best service when it comes to these sorts of occasions. I think that's cool that you went to a pub for Valentine's. Hope you had great weather.

  8. We don't celebrate it, either. I forget holidays, I'm totally unromantic, I hate corporations telling what to do and when. I'm a wee bit antagonistic and obstreperous about the whole thing.
I prefer to show my man everyday that I like his face and choose to stay in our marriage.
I made heart soaps, too! I love working with those heart silicone molds - so easy to get the soap out!
I'm totally gonna read that book, too.... :-)

    1. You don't remember because you're too busy working on your yard, keeping your animals safe & dry and soap making Lindsey. I know what you mean, I want to celebrate every day as being special, not just this one day I'm told I should be all lovey-dovey.

I like your way of thinking, that is absolutely the way to show true love!

I saw your heart soaps, they are so cute! I forgot to say so on Twitter tho, sorry! Yeah if you like suspenseful books, you definitely have to read it.

  9. I don't celebrate Valentine day but I see that it is more popular every year here. Your idea is really grate and you can implement it later on since heart shaped soaps are always welcome an popular :)
