New Toys

I have whined and complained about not having moulds that allow me to try out new designs, so enough whining already. I bought myself a guest soap mould and a mini loaf mould from WSP.

Of course, as soon as I do that, I draw a blank on what I want to make. That's what I love about Pinterest, so many good ideas, so many things to drool over. Of course most of the soaps on Pinterest are CP soaps with all those gorgeous swirls and fluffy tops, stuff that you can't do with MP soaps, or at least I can't.

I thought I'd try and do the marbling at least, and this was the result.  I kinda botched the second layer (from what I had in mind) by spraying the first layer with rubbing alcohol so it'd adhere, but then it spread the colour dots in ways I didn't want them to spread. But putting on a third layer covered it up, so it's all good.

Reminds me of a Rorschach test. What do you see?

Or maybe it's more like a kid's finger painting project.
Next I decided that I'm tired of winter and snow and so I'd do a summer theme. (I know, I have nothing to complain about on the west coast, but hey, we're not Winnipeg, we don't comprehend snow here). Nothing says summer like palm trees, beach balls and sun right? And an exotic fruit smoothie scent finishes off the summer scene.

Have a great week and for those of you dealing with way more snow than we are, my sympathies.

  1. I think I know how you feel about winter. With the sunny and mild winter in Tokyo there is no reason to complain but I cannot wait for spring and then summer to come :)
Using new molds is fun, isn't it :)
Though the above soaps are not what you had in mind, the colors are beautiful and the pink/white one looks like a modern art painting. The colors of the blue/yellow one cry "Summer!" Both soaps have that unique look which is very difficul to achieve when you want it! And the third one! So cute and and summer-y!!

    1. Oh how nice it must be to have the mild weather Maya. For me, the first sign of spring is when the cherry blossoms are in bloom. It is great fun having new moulds to play with, but I wish I could be more creative with them. I guess it just takes practice.

Thank you for the compliment. I like the idea of modern art, no one can tell you if you're doing it wrong. :D Hopefully if we're making summery soaps, summer will take a hint and get here sooner. :)

  2. Beautiful, Monica! Such a pretty summer soap. And the marbled soaps are so cool, like tie-dye. I saw Dumbo the Flying Elephant in the Rorschach soap. (The white part is his face and trunk.) I wonder what that reveals about me?

    1. Thank you Jenny! I like to think the scent matches the beach scene pretty well.

Dumbo, that's great! I think it says you're a Disney fan and you're very creative; that's why you make such wonderful soaps. (I'll take off my Carl Jung mask now. :) )

  3. The first one is so interesting- I'd call it 'Volcano&Lake water'. At least, this is how I see it and I like the idea of merging contrasting warm/cold colours.
I have to be honest, I don't quite understand- is the second soap a single piece, or a log? I like it very much, it's quite special and very uniquely shaped, if it's a piece. I think you don't lack creativity, they both are beautiful.

    1. And it's also gorgeous if it's going to be cut in 4.

    2. You come up with the best names Maja! I love it! I hadn't thought too much about the colours when I used them, but now that you mention it, I totally see it. Thank you!

The second one I think would work best if cut into 4 pieces. I think it would make a great give-away for say kids' birthday gifts where parents could just cut the soap into 4 parts and let the kids fight over them. :D

  4. Those first soaps look like tie-dye...very cool! I love the summer soap too, I think that's a really neat idea to sell it like it is, or maybe you could score it so people would have the idea they could cut them? Love it!

    1. You're right Cee, it is sort of a tie-dye look, which means I should've scented it with patchouli right? (One of these days, I'll have to get over my own aversion of that scent and buy some).

Scoring it is a great idea, thank you! This is another great thing about all of you, you have such great thoughts on how I can improve.

  5. We all love that feeling of buying/receiving new molds, isn't it, Monica?
The 1st soap is interesting, and I do like Maja's name, it goes well together.
I like your summer soap too, I would cut it in 4 too and give it to children ;).
    Wish you a lovely weekend,Monica

    1. Getting a new mold is like Christmas or birthdays isn't it Nat? I did take Maja's advice and named it that when I posted it on Pinterest. I think it was the name that caught another pinner's interest.

Hope you have a great rest of the week Nat.

  6. How did I miss this post? I really like the marbling effect! The embeds soap is funky; I'll be it smells great. But how do you use it since it's so long? Will you cut them up into 4 soaps with one embed each (sorry If you've answered that above already).

    1. You missed it because you've got a million things on the go at any given time? You're not sitting in front of your laptop staring at it, waiting for somebody to update their FB page or Twitter feed, or post a new picture on Pinterest? (I'm totally describing myself here).

The marbling turned out well and it looks even better in the picture. Yes, the idea is to cut the long soap into 4 with an embed in each one. Ideally for those parents with 2.3 kids so they can try and figure out how to divide it all evenly. :D Cee had a great idea of scoring it so people know where to cut.
