You Can't Get Wine from a Cow

I have some great ideas for soaps, or at least I think so. But when I try and get the idea from my brain into an actual soap, it's like someone wanting to paint a replica of the Mona Lisa and ending up with a stick figure.

I found a cute mould at the thrift store while shopping with my sister (I think I mentioned that before, but I'm old and forgetful, so you'll have to bear with me) which I keep wanting to use as a wine bottle. My idea this time was to make champagne complete with bubbles and of course use the champagne FO. Oh such a great idea in my mind, the circles would be 3-D, they'd be floating in the background of the bottle like it'd been just popped. Cue to reality.

The "bubbles"were made using an ice cube mould and turned out bigger than I was hoping. No matter, they can still be bubbly. The bottle however, still looks like a freakin' milk bottle. I even added glittery mica to evoke a festive scene, but even glitter couldn't save this soap.

But it smells darn good!

So from now on, I think this mould will be saved for making soaps with goat's milk and maybe I'll learn to make some bath cookies to go with it.

On the bright side, a dear friend gave me three new moulds for my birthday, so I'll have some hopefully wonderful new soaps to show in the coming weeks.

Do you ever have ideas that just never turn out the way you think?

  1. I think your idea of using the bottle mold for goat's milk soap in the future is great!

I commiserate with your lament of your ideas not looking like what was in your head after they come out. I have that problem with both my art and writing sometimes.

    1. Well it certainly makes more sense than trying to make it look like a wine bottle Teresa. :)

Having seen your artwork and read your stories, I find it hard to believe that you have any trouble making either of those things flow smoothly from brain to hand.

  2. Ditto was Teresa said. I think you'll be pleased when you create a milk soap with that mold. Also, when you discover the secret of turning something in the brain into reality let me know, my whole life is full of dreams that I cannot make happen. I have great cp soap ideas in my head and it always seems so easy in my mind until I get into the soap kitchen. lol!

    1. Yeah I have to stop trying to force the square peg into the round hole. I think you make fabulous stuff MIchelle, you just have to tell yourself that.

  3. It still looks pretty, Monica! The Champagne FO does smell darn good. I've plotted out many a beautiful project in my mind just to have it not turn out. I have an especially difficult time with embedding M&P in M&P soap. I melt the embeds, or the embeds are too big, or the layers come apart, or something like that. I eventually gave up on M&P embedding - it seems I just don't have the skill or patience for it. And lately the trace on my CP soap has been accelerating, making it so that I can't do the lovely swirls and whatnot that I had planned on. Sigh.

    1. Thanks Jenny! I think it looks like someone merged a Monet painting with some grade schoolers art project. ;D

I find it hard to believe that your soap projects don't turn out, they always look so beautiful! But I guess even the most skilled artists have their off days right?

  4. Yea, you need a bottle with longer neck and shorter body, but the goat milk idea is awesome. Do you use goat milk soap base, or do you add it to the ordinary base?

    1. Yeah I guess the idea of the mould was to look more like a milk bottle than a wine bottle. I use a goat's milk base, I don't think I'd trust myself to no overdo it if I added goat's milk powder into a regular base.
