Let them wash with cake

Maybe that's what Marie Antoinette was meant to have said.

I'm not normally big on sweets, but every so often I crave something decadent. Being that there's only two of us in this household, it doesn't make much sense to make a cake to feed 16 people (much as hubby would love to see that). To combat my sweets craving, I decided to try my hand at an opera cake, but in soap form.

For anyone who's unfamiliar with an opera cake, here's an example.

I started it by pouring the layers into the mould (gotta love clear moulds) and then cutting it down so I could pour the "icing" over it after. This time I made sure to give each layer plenty of time to set before I poured the next one so that they wouldn't meld into one another.

I tried to make my "frosting" a bit darker by adding in some charcoal but it just made the colouring murky. So to compensate, I added more bakery beige colouring from Soapy Love's tart kit. Maybe next time I'll use straight clear soap rather than a mix of clear and white. The scent is rocky road fudge. 

After cutting it, it looks more like a Kit Kat bar to me, but opera cake sounds much more sophisticated.

  1. I think it looks amazing! And Kit Kat bars are the best of the crappy, child-labor chocolate bars out there!

    Oh now I want to make an opera cake...looks a bit like a Sacher Torte. :)

    1. Thanks Teresa! For me it was a toss up between Kit Kat and 3 Musketeers, but Kit Kat definitely has more substance to it.

      Can you wait til you visit before you make an opera cake or a sacher torte? ;}

    1. LOL Cee! You need to come to the lower mainland more often, esp since there's been George Clooney sightings of late. Lots of bakeries here that purport to make a great version of the cake.

      I'm glad you like it, I wish I had made the layers thinner, but that can be the goal for the next one.

    3. Hmmm, George with opera cake all over him... okay cold shower time. :D I think it just means you need to come this way more often. Plus, we're just a hop and a skip from Otion too. Yes, I'm a bad influence. That's what it says on my resume at least. ;)

    2. Thanks Silvia! I haven't had an opera cake in ages, so now I'm really craving one. I was quite happy with how the layers seem quite even, especially since I was eyeballing it rather than measuring out each layer.

      I'm glad you enjoyed the title, I like word plays, although I'm not always successful. :)

  4. Honestly, I like your version better. I mean, not that I don't like sweets, but this 'opera' looks too 'bread-y', (that's how I call, in my language, all cakes with layers of sponge cake- I hope I chose the right word), not creamy enough for me!
    I like your soap soooooo mucch, it looks really yummy,how did you make outer brown layer all around the soap?

    1. Thanks Maja! Too bread-y, that's a good description. You like your cake with more chocolate and cream? I can totally go for that.

      I made the outer layer by pouring the layers first, then trimming it down slightly. I poured a layer on the bottom that the layers could sit on, and then poured the rest of the "icing" all over it. I'd like to try it again with a round mould and see how it works.

    1. Thanks Jenny! It really helps to slow down and pay attention to what you're doing. I know, stating the obvious, but it took a while for that lesson to sink in for me.

      Hopefully no one will try to take a bite, but I do hope others will think it looks edible as well.
